Diabetes NZ Rotorua YOUTH - Supporting our Kids with Diabetes and their Parents

We support children and young people with diabetes, and their friends, family and whanau. We recognise the implications of diabetes in the lives of young people, and strive to work towards reducing the harmful impact of diabetes on our youth.

Youth Committee

Diabetes NZ Rotorua has a sub-committee that exists specifically to support young people with diabetes and their families in the Rotorua area.

Charlie Windell is our Youth Coordinaor and runs the Parent Support Network.

Youth Camps

Going off to camp is often the first opportunity for independence for a child with diabetes, and it is an invaluable experience that we believe should be offered to every child with diabetes. (It also gives parents a well-earned break from the 24/7 responsibilities that can erode the sanity of even the strongest...)

We are actively involved with a program aimed at increasing the availability of camps to young people with diabetes across the Midland Region.

Youth Camps

Diabetes NZ Rotorua is happy to subsidise funding for Rotorua children with diabetes to attend camp.

Parent's Group

If you are the parent or carer of a child with diabetes living in or near Rotorua then you may be interested in getting together with others for coffee (or something stronger, depending on the occasion!) and a chat. Contact Charlie Windell for more information.

Diabetes in Young People

Diabetes affects people of all ages.

Type 1 (juvenile or insulin dependent) diabetes typically develops in childhood, or early adulthood and is becoming more common in New Zealand, as it is elsewhere.

Alarmingly, Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes is also on the increase in children. This type of diabetes has traditionally affected middle-aged to older persons, however it is now becoming a significant health threat to the younger generation.
